Is your Blue Badge up for renewal?

Blue Badge Renewal Guide - Is Yours Due?

Everything you need to know about renewing your Blue Badge - when to apply, what it costs, what to send, and what to do if your renewal is taking longer than expected.

Your Blue Badge lasts up to three years - and it does not renew automatically. You need to reapply before your current badge expires to avoid any gap in your parking privileges. This guide walks you through everything you need to know.

Important: Renewals are currently taking up to six months in some areas. The government recommends applying at least 12 weeks before your badge expires - but given current delays, applying even earlier gives you the best chance of continuous coverage.

Good news: Applying early will not reduce the validity of your new badge. Your replacement badge starts the day after your existing one ends, so you will not lose any time by renewing ahead of schedule.

How to Renew Your Blue Badge

The renewal process is the same as a new application - you apply online or by post through your local council. Online is faster and allows you to track your application by email.

  • 1
Visit GOV.UK - Apply for or renew a Blue Badge if you live in England, Scotland or Wales. Northern Ireland residents apply via nidirect.gov.uk
  • 2Upload your documents and photo - see the checklist below for what you will need
  • 3Submit your application and note your reference number
  • 4You will receive an email confirmation. If approved, it will include instructions on how to pay your local council
  • 5After payment, your badge will be ordered. Allow up to 10 working days for delivery once issued

What You Will Need to Renew

  • Your current Blue Badge details (badge number and expiry date)
  • A recent digital photo - head and shoulders, passport style
  • Your National Insurance number
  • Proof of identity - passport, driving licence or birth certificate
  • Proof of address - a council tax bill, utility bill or government letter
  • Proof of eligibility - your benefit award letter (PIP, DLA, AA) or supporting medical evidence if applying on assessment

What Does a Blue Badge Renewal Cost?

The cost varies depending on where you live in the UK.

England Up to £10 Paid to your local council
Scotland Up to £20 Paid to your local council
Wales Free No charge
N. Ireland £10 Paid to Blue Badge Unit

You should receive a refund of the fee if your renewal application is unsuccessful.

Is Renewal Guaranteed?

No - renewal is not automatic and eligibility is reassessed each time you apply. Just because you held a Blue Badge previously does not guarantee you will receive one on renewal. Your local council will review your current circumstances and may request updated medical evidence or an assessment.

If your condition has changed since your last application - or if the benefit your badge was linked to has changed - make sure your supporting evidence reflects your current situation rather than what you submitted previously.

Also important: If you stop receiving the benefit your badge was linked to - for example if your PIP award changes - you may need to reapply sooner than the three year renewal date. Contact your local council if your circumstances change.

What If Your Renewal Is Taking Too Long?

Processing times vary considerably between councils. If you have been waiting longer than 12 weeks without a decision, contact your local council directly and ask for an update. Keep your reference number and email confirmation to hand.

If your badge expires while you are waiting for a renewal decision, contact your council - some councils make provisions for holders whose badges expire during a pending renewal. However this varies by area, so do not assume your expired badge can still be used without checking first.

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Badge

If your badge has been lost, stolen or damaged and it is not due to expire within the next three months, you need to use a separate replacement service rather than the renewal form. Report a lost or stolen badge to your local council as soon as possible - misuse of a Blue Badge carries a fine of up to £1,000.

Blue Badge Renewal - Scotland

Scotland uses the same GOV.UK online application system for renewals. The process is broadly the same as England and Wales but the cost is higher at up to £20. If your renewal is refused in Scotland, you have 28 days to formally appeal - this is a more structured process than in England and Wales where there is no formal set appeals procedure.
