Can You Park on Single or Double Yellow Lines with a Blue Badge?
Your complete guide to Blue Badge parking rules, where you can park, for how long, and what to watch out for across the UK.
Navigating parking as a Blue Badge holder can feel like a minefield, but the good news is that your badge opens up significantly more options than most people realise. Understanding your rights means you can get out and about with confidence, whether you're running errands, visiting friends, or heading to an appointment.
Here's a clear, straightforward breakdown of what your Blue Badge lets you do when it comes to yellow lines.
Can You Park on Single Yellow Lines with a Blue Badge?
Yes and this surprises a lot of people. Single yellow lines indicate restricted parking during certain hours for the general public, but as a Blue Badge holder you can park on them for up to three hours, unless signs nearby indicate otherwise.
The rules are simple: display your Blue Badge clearly on the dashboard, and set your parking clock to show your time of arrival. If a civil enforcement officer checks your vehicle, they'll be able to see immediately that you're parked legally.

Top tip: Always check nearby signs for loading restrictions these apply even with a Blue Badge, and can catch people out in busy town centres.
Can You Park on Double Yellow Lines with a Blue Badge?
Yes: double yellow lines are also available to Blue Badge holders in most situations. You can park for up to three hours on double yellow lines, as long as you're not causing an obstruction and there are no loading restrictions in place.
This can be genuinely useful in busy areas where dedicated disabled parking bays are taken. As always, your badge and parking clock must be clearly displayed.

Important: Loading restrictions, shown by yellow kerb dashes or signs on nearby posts, still apply to Blue Badge holders. If there are kerb marks, don't park there regardless of your badge.
Blue Badge Parking Rules Across the UK
The rules differ slightly depending on where you are in the UK. Here's a quick overview:
England & Wales
Up to three hours on single or double yellow lines, unless there is a loading ban or local restriction.
Scotland & Northern Ireland
No time limit on yellow lines, unless local signs indicate otherwise. Always check before parking.
London is different. The usual yellow line rules don't apply in central London or the City of London. Always check local signage carefully when parking in London. Our full guide to Blue Badge parking in London covers this in detail.
Where You Cannot Park — Even with a Blue Badge
Your badge gives you significant flexibility, but there are still restricted areas that apply to everyone:
- Loading bays — unless signs specifically permit Blue Badge holders
- Clearways — marked by a red X on a blue background
- Bus stops and taxi ranks
- Pedestrian crossings and zigzag lines
- No stopping zones
- Areas with double kerb marks (yellow dashes on the kerb)

Displaying Your Blue Badge Correctly
Wherever you park, your Blue Badge must be displayed on the dashboard with the front facing up and clearly visible through the windscreen. For timed parking (such as yellow lines) your parking clock must also be displayed showing your arrival time.
Protect Your Badge with a Stylish Holder
A good Blue Badge holder keeps your permit flat, visible, and protected from fading. Our UK-made holders are hologram-safe and come with a free parking clock included, everything you need to park legally and with confidence.
Why Knowing Your Parking Rights Matters
For many Blue Badge holders, being able to park close to a destination makes the difference between getting out and staying home. This isn't just about convenience, it's about independence. The more clearly you understand your rights, the more confidently you can use them.
If you're ever unsure about a specific location, your local council's website is the best place to check for area-specific restrictions. And if you're planning a trip to London, our London parking guide is worth reading before you go.

I cannot find anywhere that says whether disabled badge holder can park on a single yellow line with 2 yellow stripes on pavement edge
it is very good thing we can park in single and double yellow line but speed limit signs are very hard for elderly; and we have to drive slowly on motor way if any time we are helpless to go.
Can you park on yellow lines with a stripe or two on the pavement.
Thanks for info. It’s just residents only parking I get confused with
You don’t mention another place where blue badges can’t park. I don’t know what restrictions apply with other outside authorities, but in most London boroughs parking is prohibited in Residents-only streets at those times displayed on the Road Signs, unless there are dedicated Disabled Bays within those Zones.
