The Dartford Crossing

This is the easiest one. There is no application at all. If you get free vehicle tax because of a disability, you do not pay, and your vehicle is checked automatically with the DVLA as you cross. The crossing is also free for everyone between 10pm and 6am every day of the year.

If you are not exempt, you will need to pay by midnight the day after you cross. A car costs £3.50, or £2.80 with a pre-pay account. Prices went up in September 2025, so figures you remember from before then are out of date. You can pay online, by phone, or with cash at a Payzone store.

M6 Toll

You will need to apply in advance for a Mobility Exemption Pass, and a Blue Badge will not be accepted as evidence. The rules have widened - you now only need one of the following, not a combination:

• A V5C showing the road tax classification 'Disabled'
• A confirmation letter for 'Disabled' tax status under a Motability lease
• War Pensioner's mobility supplement
• Armed Forces Independence Payment
• Higher rate mobility component of DLA
• Higher rate mobility component of Disability Assistance for Children and Young People
• Enhanced rate mobility component of PIP
• Enhanced rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment

There is a £7 application fee and processing takes up to seven working days, so apply well before you travel. Any journeys made before the pass is active are charged at the standard rate. The pass now works by number plate recognition - you no longer need to stop at the barriers.

The Humber Bridge

The old system of posting off an application form and receiving 20 paper vouchers has gone. Everything is handled through an online Humber Bridge Toll account now. To qualify for the Mobility Disabled Concession you need the higher rate mobility component of DLA and a fully tax-exempt vehicle, with the V5 showing "disabled". Having a Blue Badge does not qualify you on its own.

New applicants pay a one-off £10 registration fee, then £5 each year to renew. You will need to provide evidence that you still qualify at every renewal, and if you miss it, the concession comes off your vehicle and crossings are charged at the standard rate.

Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee Bridge

Here your Blue Badge is the qualifier. Register with Merseyflow, pay a one-off £5 fee, and you get unlimited free crossings on both bridges. A few things to know:

• You can only register one vehicle, so choose the one you use most
• You do not have to own it, but you do have to be in it when it crosses
• If someone else uses the car alone, they will need to pay
• You will need photos or scans of both sides of your badge, uploaded as two separate files
• If your badge expires, remember to re-register with the new details

Mersey Tunnels (Liverpool to Wirral)

Different scheme, different rules. For the Queensway and Kingsway tunnels you need a Blue Badge and at least one of the following: the highest rate mobility component of DLA, the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP, a War Pension mobility supplement, or you are over 65 and receive the highest rate of Attendance Allowance.

You will get 200 free journeys a year if you live in Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley or St Helens, and 40 a year if you live outside those areas. You can check how many you have left online or by phone.

Apply through Merseytravel. Let them know if you change your nominated vehicle, or you will be charged the full toll.

Tyne Tunnel (near Newcastle)

Another one where the Blue Badge does the work. You qualify for an exemption account if you are a Blue Badge holder, or if you are entitled to nil road tax through Motability or a disability exemption. You can register one vehicle and change it once per calendar month, and exemptions need renewing every year. Blue Badge holders can now update their own vehicle registration online.

Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry (Plymouth to Cornwall)

Pre-register and you will get an annual allowance of free crossings. You need at least one of: DLA with the mobility component at the higher level, the equivalent PIP benefit, a War Pension with mobility supplement, or registration as a blind person.

Applications are handled by post only, sent to the Torpoint Ferry Office. They cannot process them over the counter.

Itchen Bridge (A3025, Woolston to Southampton)

The old tokens have been replaced. You now get the concession loaded onto a SmartCities card or a concessionary bus pass. You qualify with the higher rate mobility component of DLA, a War Pension mobility supplement, or PIP at eight points or above against the mobility activities criteria, covering both 'moving around' and 'journey planning'.

One important detail: free crossing applies to class 2 vehicles only - cars and light vans measuring no more than 1.33 metres in height at the first axle. The person the card was issued to has to be in the vehicle, or the full toll applies.

Clifton Suspension Bridge (B3129, west of Bristol)

This one has tightened up, so read carefully if you have qualified in the past. Concessionary Bridge Cards are now only available to people with a BS postcode who receive either the higher rate mobility component of DLA or the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP. Being exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty no longer qualifies you on its own, and there is no concession for Blue Badge holders without the qualifying benefit.

The card costs £10 and covers unlimited crossings for 12 months. If you are not eligible, the toll is currently £1, paid by contactless at the barrier. The Trust has applied to raise it to £1.50 from around January 2027, subject to a government decision. They have confirmed the disabled concession will not change as a result.

There is a disabled parking bay at both ends of the bridge and an assistance button on the toll barriers. The concessions line is open 8:30am to 12:30pm, Monday to Thursday only.

Severn Crossings (M4 and M48)

Tolls were scrapped on both the Prince of Wales Bridge and the original Severn Bridge in December 2018, after 52 years. The booths have gone and both crossings are free for everyone, badge or no badge.
